<a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/real-racing-2-the-most-authentic-racing-experience-on-a-mobile-device-iphone/">Real Racing 2 – The Most Authentic Racing Experience On A Mobile Device [iPhone]</a><br />December 13, 2012<br />By <a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/author/dleclair/">Dave LeClair</a><br /><br /><img src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/2012-12-04-14.12.03-e1354680381178.png" /><br />Sometimes, a video game is able to blow you away with visuals. Generally speaking, I am not a gamer who gets too caught up in visuals. I am far more concerned with how the game plays than how it looks. However, every so often, a game offers visuals that are so impressive that it actually outshines the gameplay. Of course, a game needs to have fun mechanics in order to keep you coming back for more, but great visuals can most certainly draw you in.<br /><a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/real-racing-2/id386568787?mt=8">Real Racing 2</a> is an example of a game with visuals that are so good you cannot help but want to play it. On top of that, it is a lot of fun, with some of the most realistic racing mechanics you can find in any video game. The fact that is played on the iPhone is even more insane. It rivals any console racing game, but you can take it with you anywhere you go.<br />If you are looking for a racing game that is more than just a simple arcade racer, Real Racing 2 is a game you need to have installed on your device.<br />Gameplay<br />In Real Racing 2, you get some of the most realistic car action you can find on a mobile device. In fact, sometimes it is hard to believe that you are actually playing the game on an iPhone. The cars have a real sense of the weight and handling that you typically only find in games like Forza and Gran Turismo. It includes 30 licensed cars that are meticulously crafted to look and feel just like their real-world counterparts.<br /><img src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/realracing22.jpg" /><br />The controls are fantastic. You can choose from a number of different control options that give you more or less control over the car, depending on how authentic you want the game to feel. You can also tweak the level of driving assists. If you want to feel like you are driving a real, high-performance car, turn them all off. If you prefer a more arcadey feel, leave them on and just enjoy the ride.<br /><img src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/2012-12-04-23.03.51-e1354680319650.png" /><br />Real Racing 2 features plenty of modes to keep things fun and exciting. It comes with online multiplayer so you can challenge friends and random players around the world. Racing against real players is always more satisfying, and Real Racing 2 offers some quality multiplayer to go along with its quality driving mechanics.<br />Audio & Visual<br />As I mentioned in the intro, Real Racing 2 looks amazing. It comes equipped with some of the best visuals you will ever see in an iPhone game. The team at Firemint have found a way to optimize the capabilities of the device and push it to its absolute limit in terms of graphical fidelity. Sometimes, I actually forget that I am playing a game on my iPhone while inside Real Racing 2; it looks that good.<br /><img src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/realracing23.jpg" /><br />A nice touch in the visuals is seen in the cockpit view. When you slow down to go around a corner, or after you bump another car, you actually see the driver reach down and shift gears. It’s a small touch that helps keep the game feeling authentic.<br /><img src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/realracing25.jpg" /><br />The game sounds almost as good as it looks. The music is fitting for the game without being overpowering. The cars sound authentic and help increase the immersed feel. Upshifting and downshifting sounds like you would expect it to, and it gives you a sense of speed with the engine noise matching the speed of the car.<br />Value<br /><img src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/realracing24.jpg" /><br />Real Racing 2 is on the <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/real-racing-2/id386568787?mt=8">App Store</a> for $4.99, and it is worth every penny. It features a career mode that is over ten hours long, plenty of options for quick play sessions and robust multiplayer suit that will keep gamers coming back for a long time.<br />Conclusion<br />If you want a high quality racing game on iOS, Real Racing 2 is the game for you. It has stunning visuals, quality sound, and lots of gameplay to keep you entertained. It is one of the best games available on the App Store, and it’s one every iOS gamer should have installed on their devices.</blockquote>

Typically, the in-built webcam is used for video chatting or video calls. If these are the only tasks you use the camera of your Android device for, then you are wasting precious potential for a lot of fun.<br /><br />Let me introduce you to five alternative uses for your Android device’s webcam, which involve fun and professional photo effects, time lapse photography, voice control, and motion detection. With the apps I suggest, you can monitor your candy stack, turn boring snapshots into pieces of art and take a group photo by shouting at your camera from across the room.<br />Motion Detection [Android 2.0+]<br /><br /><a href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.busywww.cameratrigger">Camera Trigger</a> is designed to take a snapshot upon detecting motion in a defined area within the camera’s field of vision. It can make a single shot or take photos continuously as long as motion is detected within the designated hotspot. To indicate the event it will also play a sound.<br /><br /><img border="0" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/AndroidWebcam04.png?6cc8a5" /><br /><br />When you launch the app you will be taken through a very well done tutorial that explains the setup and functions in cartoon style.<br /><br /><img border="0" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/AndroidWebcam03.png?6cc8a5" /><br /><br />A drawback of the app is that it only works for as long as the screen of your Android device doesn’t turn off.<br />Voice Control [Android 2.2+]<br /><br /><a href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.saycheese&feature=search_result">Say Cheese</a> is a pretty neat app all together, but voice control is definitely its coolest feature. You can trigger the camera with the words cheese or smile, you can zoom in, zoom out, zoom max, or zoom clear, and you can do a camera switch. It takes only minimal practice to get the keywords and the app will work fairly well off the bat.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><img border="0" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/AndroidWebcam05.png?6cc8a5" /><br /><br />Stealth mode is another interesting feature, in which all sounds are turned off and the app is darkened to a barely visible toggle button. To take a picture in stealth mode, you simply press anywhere on the screen. A first vibration of the device will confirm that the camera is focusing and a second indicates that the picture was captured.<br />Photo Effects<br /><br />HDR is the acronym for High Dynamic Range, a photo processing technique that allows for “a greater dynamic range of luminance between the lightest and darkest areas of an image” [<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_dynamic_range_imaging">Wikipedia</a>].<br />HDR Camera [Android 2.2+]<br /><br /><a href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.almalence.hdr&feature=search_result">HDR Camera</a> is an app that automatically creates HDR images. You can control the outcome by adjusting the settings, for example by changing color vividness to saturated or black and white.<br /><br /><img border="0" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/AndroidWebcam06.png?6cc8a5" /><br />FXCamera [Android 1.5+]<br /><br />Another interesting app is <a href="https://market.android.com/details?id=ymst.android.fxcamera&feature=search_result">FxCamera</a>, which provides a set of effects, including ToyCam, Polandroid, Fisheye, SymmetriCam, or Warhol. You can also get a plain and simple normal camera view.<br /><br /><img border="0" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/AndroidWebcam02.png?6cc8a5" /><br /><br />Unfortunately, it is not tablet-fit as it only takes up a small portion of the screen.<br />Time Lapse<br />Action Snap [Android 2.1+]<br /><br /><a href="https://market.android.com/details?id=oursky.gesturecam&feature=search_result">Action Snap</a> is a camera app specialized on capturing action and movement. It can take multiple photos in intervals of 0.1 to five seconds or more (custom setting). When the time has elapsed and all picture were taken, the tool combines them all into one neat image.<br /><br /><img border="0" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/AndroidWebcam07.png?6cc8a5" /><br /><br />You can share images created with Action Snap on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr using Steply.<br /><br />For more creative camera effects, also check out these <a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-hipstamaticequivalent-android-apps-retro-photo-effects/">3 Hipstamatic-Equivalent Android Apps For Retro Photo Effects</a> and <a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/add-cool-effects-photos-photo-android-16/">Add Cool Effects To Your Photos With Little Photo [Android 1.6+]</a>.<br /><br />Many more camera-related Android apps have been reviewed on MakeUseOf:<br /><a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/fantastic-full-resolution-images-vignette-android-15/">Take Fantastic Full Resolution Images With Vignette [Android 1.5+]</a><br /><a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/beautiful-photos-camera360-free-android-15/">Take Beautiful Photos With Camera360 Free [Android 1.5+]</a><br /><a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/lightbox-photos-sophisticated-camera-photosharing-app-android-21/">Lightbox Photos – A Sophisticated Camera & Photo-Sharing App [Android 2.1+]</a><br /><br />What is your favorite use for your Android phone or tablet camera?<br /><br />Image credits: <a href="http://www.shutterstock.com/pic.mhtml?id=2047004">Feng Yu</a><br /><br /><br />More articles about:<br /><a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/camera/">camera</a><br /><a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/cameraphones/">camera phone</a><br /><a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/image-effects/">image effect</a><br /><a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/photography/">photography</a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-ways-fun-smartphone-camera-android/#comments">6 Comments</a><br /><br /><img src="http://1.gravatar.com/avatar/d842970bd0b291fa7d06ba093285d1e0?s=57&d=http%3A%2F%2F0.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D57&r=G" /><br />Tina Sieber<br />Tina is a freelance writer, editor, natural scientist, and cosmopolitan with a strong interest in sustainability. If you own a <a href="http://androidcommunity.com/tag/samsung-galaxy-nexus" style="border: 0px; color: #ca4f5b; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: initial; vertical-align: baseline;">Samsung Galaxy Nexus</a>, we have some good news for you. A developer that goes by the Twitter handle @KillDroidHack has managed to grab all of the core apps for <a href="http://androidcommunity.com/tag/android-4.2" style="border: 0px; color: #ca4f5b; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: initial; vertical-align: baseline;">Android 4.2</a> and uploaded them in a nice little zip file that you can flash to your phone and use. This should come in handy if you want to check out the latest stuff right this minute instead of waiting.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #444444; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, 'Nimbus Sans L', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 24px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-107413" height="392" src="http://cdn.androidcommunity.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Galaxy-Nexus-AC-540x392.jpeg" style="border: 0px; clear: both; display: block; height: auto; margin: 0px auto 12px; max-width: 100%; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" width="540" /><br /><span id="more-109788" style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"></span><br />This zip files has all the cool stuff such as Gmail, the keyboard, clock, PhotoSphere, calendar, alarm, and more goodness. If you can’t wait for if and when 4.2 hits your Samsung Galaxy Nexus, you no longer need to. Of course, it needs to be said that we did not put this ZIP file together, and we are not responsible for what is contained within. Anytime you install anything like this to your phone, you need to be careful. If something bad happens, don’t blame us.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #444444; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, 'Nimbus Sans L', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 24px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The one app that was notably missing was Google Wallet. Well, OMGDroid’s Keyan has gone and uploaded a separate file with Google Wallet, so you can flash that to your device as well. Between this, and the larger ZIP file, you can get most of the Android 4.2 experience on your device right now.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #444444; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, 'Nimbus Sans L', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 24px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
When you install these apps, make sure install them like a normal apk, or place it into your system apps. Be sure you know what you are doing; the last thing you want is to brick your phone trying to install these apps. This is definitely some good news for owners of the Galaxy Nexus. Looks like the holidays are here a little early for you guys.</div>

In many ways, LEDs seem like the best bet: they're generally more efficient, last longer, turn on faster, fit more places, and produce better quality of light than their fluorescent counterparts. One tiny problem: While you can find nice, bright incandescents as cheap as $0.25 per bulb at your local hardware store, and CFLs around $1.25 a pop, LED light bulbs currently start at around $20 each for a 60-watt equivalent.</span></span><br />

<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
Ouch. And when you factor in that LEDs aren't that much more efficient than CFLs — <a href="http://energy.gov/energysaver/articles/frequently-asked-questions-lighting-choices-save-you-money" style="color: #fb4834; text-decoration: initial;" target="_blank">the US Department of Energy estimates</a> $1.00 to run an Energy Star-certfied LED bulb for two hours a day each year, compared to $1.20 a year for an equivalent CFL — it's really hard to justify outfitting your home with LEDs right now.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
But what if you got more for your money than a globe that simply lights up? That's the premise of the smart bulb.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<img alt="Philips-hue-led-hands-on-26_560" class="photo" src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/1704359/philips-hue-led-hands-on-26_560.jpg" style="border: 0px;" /></div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
At its most basic, a smart bulb is simply a light bulb that's part of a computer network, with its own IP address. When you press a button, it sends a signal to the bulb that turns it on or off, or dims it to a particular brightness level.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<q class="center" style="color: #fa4b2a; display: block; font-family: ff-din-web-condensed, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 38px; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; letter-spacing: -1px; line-height: 38px; margin: 25px auto; padding: 5px; quotes: none; text-transform: uppercase; width: 500px;">WHAT IF YOU GOT MORE FOR YOUR MONEY THAN A BULB THAT SIMPLY LIGHTS UP?</q></div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
That might not sound like much of an improvement over a traditional bulb, but now imagine that every single bulb in your home is network-controlled. You could turn off all of them at once, or just in particular rooms. You could control them with a tablet or smartphone, even when you're not at home. You could set them to run on schedules, automatically turning off when you're in bed and then slowly, gently waking you up again in the morning. With multi-color LEDs, you could set them to any color you want for mood lighting, parties, or even to aid in photography.</div>

Believe it or not, all of that is possible right now with the first wave of smart bulbs. Philips, Insteon and GreenWave Reality are all shipping kits that can interface wirelessly with an iPhone or iPad. These systems use standard mesh networking technology, so they don't all need to be near the router: each bulb communicates wirelessly with the others around it. In fact, the systems support some standard protocols, like Zigbee and Z-Wave, so they can be integrated into existing home automation systems.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
Again, these bulbs aren't cheap — the <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2012/10/29/3570322/philips-hue-led-customizable-bulb-apple-store-home-automation" style="color: #fb4834; text-decoration: initial;" target="_blank">color-changing Philips Hue</a> costs $199.99 for a three-bulb kit, and plain white Insteon bulbs run $29.99 each — but they're designed to be as easy to use as possible. "If you can screw in a bulb, you can use our system," GreenWave Reality CEO Greg Memo told us.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
To put that statement to the test and see just how far LED light bulbs have come, we tried out both the Philips Hue and GreenWave Reality light bulbs in our own homes.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
Basic setup is easy, that's for sure. You just screw in the bulbs, plug a little wireless base station into your home network, fire up an app from the App Store (Philips has a beta on Android) and technology does the rest. The bulbs come pre-paired to their base stations, so you don't need to sync them up. If you buy additional bulbs you simply screw them in, turn them on and press a sync button on the router to add them to your collection.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
The first thing that takes some getting used to is that you can't really use your physical light switches to turn smart bulbs on and off. Because there are computer chips inside the bulbs, you need to keep a small amount of power flowing at all times if you want them to stay smart. If you do use the physical switch, they will turn on and off, but only to a default state, and you disrupt the cool things they could be doing. GreenWave and Insteon both sell simple remote controls you can use, but for Philips your only option is to whip out your smartphone. That might sound cool, but it's much slower than flipping a switch on the wall, and gets really old, really fast when you walk into a dark room.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<q class="center" style="color: #fa4b2a; display: block; font-family: ff-din-web-condensed, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 38px; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; letter-spacing: -1px; line-height: 38px; margin: 25px auto; padding: 5px; quotes: none; text-transform: uppercase; width: 500px;">CONTROLLING THE BULBS CAN BE A CHORE</q></div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
Even with the smartphone apps, though, controlling the bulbs can be a bit of a chore. GreenWave takes a fairly utilitarian approach, giving you direct control over each bulb and its brightness level from the app's main screen. You can also group them into "rooms" so you can toggle and dim several all at once, and the app creates one for you by default. To do anything else, though, like scheduling timers and controlling multiple rooms, you need to make a "smart control," a process that isn't very self-explanatory. The biggest problem is a lack of responsiveness, though. Often there was a major delay between the time I pressed a button and the time the bulb reacted, and sometimes the app stopped responding altogether. I had similar difficulties getting the physical remote control to stay connected.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<img alt="Philips-hue-led-hands-on-29_560" class="photo" src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/1704759/philips-hue-led-hands-on-29_560.jpg" style="border: 0px;" /></div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
We didn't have that last problem with Philips' app, but it also wasn't very quick or easy to use. Here, individual bulb toggles are in a hidden menu at the bottom of the screen, and there's no switch to turn them all on at once. Instead, Philips ropes you into building a "scene" first. Here, you get a full Photoshop-like color picker to make the bulbs just about any color you like, or simply change the color temperature to be warmer like a traditional yellow incandescent, cooler like a traditional blue fluorescent light source, or a nice neutral white if you want. You can also use an eyedropper tool to pick colors directly from your favorite photos.<q class="right" style="color: #fa4b2a; display: block; float: right; font-family: ff-din-web-condensed, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 38px; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; letter-spacing: -1px; line-height: 38px; margin: 25px 0px 25px 25px; padding: 5px; quotes: none; text-transform: uppercase; width: 250px;">A NEAT PARTY TRICK</q> It's a neat party trick, but not nearly as useful as turning on the lights in a room when you need them.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
Another thing to know generally is that these smart LED bulbs might not be as bright as you'd hope. Even a cheap 25-cent incandescent produces 860 lumens of brightness at 60 watts, and a $1.25, 14-watt fluorescent manages about the same at 900 lumens. By contrast, the $60 Philips, $30 Insteon and (estimated) $20-30 GreenWave bulbs use just 8.5 watts, 8 watts and 10 watts respectively, but only put out 600 lumens, 448 lumens, and 470 lumens at maximum strength. They make good reading lights, but aren't suited for everything.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<img alt="Philips-hue-led-hands-on-25_560" class="photo" src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/1704709/philips-hue-led-hands-on-25_560.jpg" style="border: 0px;" /></div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
Lastly, there's the trouble of how to expand your smart bulb system as your lighting needs grow. Though all these smart bulbs connect with standard mesh network technology, none of them are compatible with one another. Philips uses <a href="http://www.zigbee.org/Standards/ZigBeeLightLink/Overview.aspx" style="color: #fb4834; text-decoration: initial;" target="_blank">ZigBee Light Link</a>, GreenWave uses <a href="http://www.nxp.com/news/press-releases/2011/05/nxp-enables-the-internet-of-things-with-jennet-ip-software.html" style="color: #fb4834; text-decoration: initial;" target="_blank">NXP JenNet-IP</a>, and Insteon <a href="http://www.insteon.net/" style="color: #fb4834; text-decoration: initial;" target="_blank">seems to have its own</a>. Japan's Fujikom showed us an impressive smart bulb in January <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2012/1/13/2705079/wireless-LED-z-wave-fujikom-ledenq" style="color: #fb4834; text-decoration: initial;" target="_blank">that uses Z-Wave</a>. Both Philips and GreenWave say that they look forward to broad compatibility and plan to make software APIs available, but for now there doesn't seem to be a concerted effort to have a unified standard that's friendly to consumers.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
Clearly, this first wave of smart bulbs has a long way to go, much like LED lighting itself, but it's also clear that there a lot of potential in the idea. If companies can work out the standards differences, build intuitive controls and compelling use cases, this could still go somewhere.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<iframe frameborder="0" height="420" src="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/limemouse/lifx-the-light-bulb-reinvented/widget/video.html" style="border-width: 0px;" width="560"></iframe></div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
Just take a look at the ideas behind the LIFX, <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/limemouse/lifx-the-light-bulb-reinvented" style="color: #fb4834; text-decoration: initial;" target="_blank">a Kickstarter project for a smart bulb</a>. Above and beyond scheduled dimming and mood lighting, the founder imagines that the bulbs could change color in time to your music, or flash when you get a notification on your smartphone. GreenWave Reality told us about a potential "away mode" for its bulbs where your house would always have a single bulb burning, but it would rotate from time to time, providing the illusion of a person at home to deter would-be robbers.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
Imagine when bulbs can report back on their energy consumption, or automatically adjust themselves to ambient light, or turn on when you walk into a room. <a href="http://www.sparkdevices.com/" style="color: #fb4834; text-decoration: initial;" target="_blank">Spark Devices</a>, a startup building a smart light bulb socket — rather than an actual light bulb — imagines an app ecosystem that could add features we haven't thought of yet. Google has shown interest in the past, too, with <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2012/2/27/2827615/android-home-automation-cloud-services-andy-rubin" style="color: #fb4834; text-decoration: initial;">the rarely-discussed Android@Home</a>, famously showing off a smart bulb with Lighting Science <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/11/lighting-science-demos-android-home-bulbs-promises-dead-simpl/" style="color: #fb4834; text-decoration: initial;" target="_blank">at Google I/O last year</a>. While Google wouldn't comment just yet, Lighting Science told us that it's still working with Google on "exciting things."</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<img alt="Philips-hue-led-hands-on-215_560" class="photo" src="http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/1704811/philips-hue-led-hands-on-215_560.jpg" style="border: 0px;" /></div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
LED light bulbs <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2012/10/1/3437044/ikea-leads-led" style="color: #fb4834; text-decoration: initial;" target="_blank">seem like they're here to stay</a>, as pricey as they are right now, and their solid state circuits are designed to last <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2012/4/17/2955611/philips-led-light-bulb-goes-on-sale-sunday" style="color: #fb4834; text-decoration: initial;">as long as twenty years</a> before needing to be swapped out. With that kind of lifetime and these kinds of prices, it doesn't cost much more to make a bulb smart as well. The time is ripe for manufacturers to get together and hash out technology compelling enough to make them worthwhile... before the last of Edison's inefficient incandescents burn out.</div>

The system consists of a handheld transmitter and tiny receivers that look like something out of a 60s spy movie. The little receivers are about the size of a quarter and are black. To use the system you stick one of the little receivers to whatever it is you tend to lose be it a smartphone, your keys, or your glasses.</div>

The system promises enough range to work even in a large 3000 square-foot home. The transmitter has four buttons that you can label to correspond to the specific devices you tend to lose. When you need to find one of those devices, you press the button associated to it and seconds after you press the button the receiver on your lost device begins to alarm.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #555555; font-family: inherit; line-height: 1.8em; list-style-type: none; margin-bottom: 8px; margin-top: 10px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The manufacturer says that the signal can be transmitted through walls and allows you to find your lost devices, even if they’re in another room. This thing sounds like a modernized version of the key chain my mother had when I was growing up that set off an alarm when you clapped or whistled.</div>

Computers are supposed to make our lives easier, yet sometimes it feels like they exist only to cause us endless amounts of frustration. Popular advice for slow computers includes antivirus, RAM upgrades, or even reinstalling Windows from scratch, but these make a lot of assumptions about what's wrong with your computer (that may not be true). Here's how you actually get your PC running fast again.</div>
<h3 style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 21px; font-style: inherit; font-weight: normal; line-height: 1.2; margin: 18px 0px 0.4em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility; vertical-align: baseline;">
Assumption #1: You Need to Load Up On Expensive Antivirus to Keep Your Computer Fast</h3>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
</div>
<div class="lyteboxContainer right editorial" style="border: 0px; float: right; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; height: 143px; margin: 0px 0px 20px 40px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; position: relative; vertical-align: baseline; width: 300px;">
<div class="lyteboxLink" style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; height: 143px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; position: absolute; text-indent: -1000em; vertical-align: baseline; width: 300px;">
<a class="noHrefOverride" href="http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/184flwolsgxwkjpg/original.jpg" rel="lytebox" style="background-attachment: scroll; background-color: transparent; background-image: url(http://ganja.gawkerassets.com/assets/base.v10.static/img/lytebox/blank.gif?hash=fc94f); background-position: 100% 0%; background-repeat: no-repeat no-repeat; border: 0px; bottom: 2px; color: #719602; display: block; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; height: 143px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; position: relative; text-decoration: none; text-indent: -100em; vertical-align: baseline; width: 300px;">Full size</a></div>
<img height="143" src="http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/184flwolsgxwkjpg/medium.jpg" style="border: 0px; float: left; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px 40px 20px 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" width="300" /></div>
When a computer starts to feel a little sluggish—particularly if it's getting a lot of popups—many people jump directly to the conclusion that they must have a virus or other malware. Usually, this means buying antivirus software, sometimes even a <em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">second</em>piece of antivirus software to make sure you're "doubly protected." However, malware protection is a lot simpler than most people make it out to be.<br />
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<b>Why It's Wrong</b>: First of all, let's talk about what it takes to get infected. Start by learning a bit more about viruses and what they do—we recommend reading <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5560443/whats-the-difference-between-viruses-trojans-worms-and-other-malware" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">our guides to malware</a>, <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5560567/nine-common-myths-and-misconceptions-about-viruses-examined-and-debunked" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">virus myths</a>, and <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5521993/how-do-you-know-if-your-download-really-has-a-virus" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">false positives in antivirus apps</a>. Your first line of defense should be safe browsing. If you're downloading shady files, clicking on internet popups, or opening links from unknown email, you'll greatly increase your chances of getting one. But if you're even mildly responsible, it's unlikely you'll ever get an infection.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

Now let's talk about antivirus. It's not only important to have antivirus software installed, but it's important to have the right kind. Check and see if you have a trusted,<em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">updated</em> antivirus program running on your machine. If you do, and it says your computer is uninfected, then you're probably safe. Next, find out <em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">what</em> antivirus software you're using. Some programs, like Norton or McAfee, are remarkably slow and bloated. In fact, they're probably one of the <em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">reasons</em> your computer is so slow. <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5401453/stop-paying-for-windows-security-microsofts-security-tools-are-good-enough" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">We recommend ditching other antivirus apps</a> and using <a href="http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/security-essentials-download" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Microsoft Security Essentials</a>. It's free, lightweight, and will let you know if you download anything suspicious. (Note that Windows 8 users already have Windows Defender built-in, so they don't even need to install anything). You should <a href="http://www.examiner.com/article/does-running-multiple-antivirus-and-firewalls-on-a-single-pc-makes-sense" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">never have two antivirus apps running at once</a>.<br />
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<b>Exceptions</b>: While a good, lightweight antivirus program will protect you from malware, it won't protect you from the much more common <em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">crapware</em>, which is another beast entirely. Crapware isn't malicious by nature. Instead, it's software that you don't want but were <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5954301/learn-the-most-common-hidden-crapware-tricks-to-keep-your-system-clean" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">probably tricked into installing</a>, and it <em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">can</em> slow down your computer. We'll talk a bit more about this in the last section, but for now, take a look in the Control Panel under Add/Remove Programs—if you see programs you don't recognize and aren't from trusted developers like Microsoft, it's probably something you don't want on your machine.</div>
<h3 style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 21px; font-style: inherit; font-weight: normal; line-height: 1.2; margin: 18px 0px 0.4em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility; vertical-align: baseline;">
Assumption #2: You Need a Bunch of Extra RAM and Hard Drive Space</h3>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<a href="http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/184flwolpys3gjpg/original.jpg" rel="lytebox" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"><img alt="The Assumptions You Make About Your Slow PC (and Why They're Probably Wrong)" class="image_3 right v10_medium" src="http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/184flwolpys3gjpg/medium.jpg" style="border: 0px; float: right; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 20px 40px; max-width: 300px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; width: 300px;" title="The Assumptions You Make About Your Slow PC (and Why They're Probably Wrong)" width="300" /></a>Another common "fix" that people turn to is hardware upgrades, specifically easy ones like RAM and hard drives. Many people think that the more RAM and hard drive space you have, the faster your computer will be. Unless you have an older computer that is filled to the brim, however, upgrading won't give you the boost you want.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<b>Why It's Wrong</b>: Installing more RAM gives your computer greater multitasking abilities, particularly when running resource-intensive applications. Unless you're using particularly RAM-hungry programs—like Photoshop, for example—you <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5415355/do-you-really-need-more-than-4gb-of-ram" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">probably only need 2-4GB of RAM</a>, which most modern computers should already have. Similarly, hard drive space is only a problem if your hard drive is filled up to the brim. If you still have 10% of your space free, you don't need to upgrade.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<b>Exceptions</b>: Upgrading your RAM will help if you have 1GB or less in your system. If you multitask a lot, you'll probably even notice a difference upgrading from 2GB to 4GB. You're best off <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5415355/do-you-really-need-more-than-4gb-of-ram" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">checking the resource monitor</a>(or Activity Monitor on OS X)" to see how much you use on a regular basis. If your RAM usage isn't running up against its limit, then you're probably fine.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Also, RAM upgrades do benefit more resource-intensive work like image or video editing, so consider upgrading even further to 8GB. Just <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5431284/the-lifehacker-guide-to-64+bit-vs-32+bit-operating-systems" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">make sure you're using a 64-bit operating system</a>so you can actually make use of it.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
When it comes to hard drives, remember we're talking about space here—hard drive upgrades can, in fact, be beneficial if you upgrade to a <em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">faster</em> hard drive like an SSD. In fact, it's one of the<a href="http://lifehacker.com/5883376/what-hardware-upgrade-will-best-speed-up-my-pc-if-i-can-only-afford-one" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">best upgrades you can make</a> to speed up a slow computer.</div>

Assumption #3: Your Hardware Is Just "Wearing Out" Over Time</h3>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
</div>
<div class="lyteboxContainer right editorial" style="border: 0px; float: right; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; height: 173px; margin: 0px 0px 20px 40px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; position: relative; vertical-align: baseline; width: 300px;">
<div class="lyteboxLink" style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; height: 173px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; position: absolute; text-indent: -1000em; vertical-align: baseline; width: 300px;">
<a class="noHrefOverride" href="http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/184hdzjki3hzyjpg/original.jpg" rel="lytebox" style="background-attachment: scroll; background-color: transparent; background-image: url(http://ganja.gawkerassets.com/assets/base.v10.static/img/lytebox/blank.gif?hash=fc94f); background-position: 100% 0%; background-repeat: no-repeat no-repeat; border: 0px; bottom: 2px; color: #719602; display: block; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; height: 173px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; position: relative; text-decoration: none; text-indent: -100em; vertical-align: baseline; width: 300px;">Full size</a></div>
<img height="173" src="http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/184hdzjki3hzyjpg/medium.jpg" style="border: 0px; float: left; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px 40px 20px 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" width="300" /></div>
Many people think that the components inside your computer get slower gradually over time, just due to wearing out. While your computer won't last forever, the hardware should stay the same speed until it dies. It doesn't get slower the more you use it.<br />
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<b>Why It's Wrong</b>: The main reason your computer slows down over time—even if you don't have a lot of apps—is that your software updates regularly, becomes more feature-filled, and needs more power to function. In theory, if you did a clean install and never updated any of your software, everything would run as fast in year four as it did on day one. But that's not exactly a feasible—or secure—way to use your computer. Your hardware will wear out, but you won't notice a gradual slowdown. Instead, it'll just die a quick, painless death one day and stop working. In fact, this quick death is a good reminder that you should <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5787572/set-up-an-automated-bulletproof-file-back-up-solution" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">back up regularly</a>.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<i>Update</i>: Many of you have pointed out that there is a big exception to this rule and that is hard drives. Hard drives <em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">can</em> start to slow down as they reach the end of their life, but if this happens to you, that means your drive is at risk for corrupting important files (at best) or dying at any time (at worst)—a much more pressing issue. You can check your disk regularly for bad sectors by opening up a Command Prompt and running <code style="border: 0px; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">chkdsk c: /r</code>. If it finds errors it can't fix, back up your data and upgrade your drive, or you could run into much bigger problems. Thanks to everyone who cleared this up.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<b>Exceptions</b>: The other exceptions are small. Some old SSDs, for example, can slow down over time. The other parts in your computer, though, will not experience this phenomenon of gradual slowdown. <i style="font-size: 12px;">Photo by <a href="http://www.sxc.hu/photo/1208415" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Axonite</a></i>.</div>

Assumption #4: You Need to Regularly Reinstall Your OS</h3>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

<div class="lyteboxContainer right editorial" style="border: 0px; float: right; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; height: 169px; margin: 0px 0px 20px 40px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; position: relative; vertical-align: baseline; width: 300px;">
<div class="lyteboxLink" style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; height: 169px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; position: absolute; text-indent: -1000em; vertical-align: baseline; width: 300px;">
<a class="noHrefOverride" href="http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/17m0i1f4o32jkjpg/original.jpg" rel="lytebox" style="background-attachment: scroll; background-color: transparent; background-image: url(http://ganja.gawkerassets.com/assets/base.v10.static/img/lytebox/blank.gif?hash=fc94f); background-position: 100% 0%; background-repeat: no-repeat no-repeat; border: 0px; bottom: 2px; color: #719602; display: block; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; height: 169px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; position: relative; text-decoration: none; text-indent: -100em; vertical-align: baseline; width: 300px;">Full size</a></div>
<img height="169" src="http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/17m0i1f4o32jkjpg/medium.jpg" style="border: 0px; float: left; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px 40px 20px 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" width="300" /></div>
While a clean installation of Windows or OS X can speed up your machine (not to mention help clear your mind), it <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5435523/you-dont-need-to-regularly-reinstall-windows-heres-why" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">isn't something you have to do</a>. Like we said before, your computer <em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">will</em> slow down over time because of newer and more power-hungry software. If you find that a clean install speeds things up, though, it's because you're installing junk programs that slow down Windows or OS X more than necessary.<br />
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<b>Why It's Wrong</b>: A clean installation runs faster because it no longer has all the apps, plugins, and other tweaks you've installed that can slow down your machine. When you do a clean install, those apps go away—until, of course, you build them back up again and start the vicious cycle once again. Instead of regularly reinstalling your OS, pay attention to what programs you use and try and keep them to a minimum. Pay particular close attention to Windows Explorer plugins, bloated antivirus apps, and other things that run in the background.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<b>Exceptions</b>: If you get a new computer that comes packaged with tons of crapware, doing a clean install can help (though so can uninstalling those programs). In addition, it's also worth mentioning that if you <em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">like</em> doing clean installs, we're not saying you <em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">shouldn't</em>—it just isn't something you <em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">have</em> to do.</div>
<h3 style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 21px; font-style: inherit; font-weight: normal; line-height: 1.2; margin: 18px 0px 0.4em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility; vertical-align: baseline;">
Assumption #5: You Need to Defrag/Clean the Registry/Tweak Prefetching/etc.</h3>

<div class="lyteboxLink" style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; height: 169px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; position: absolute; text-indent: -1000em; vertical-align: baseline; width: 300px;">
<a class="noHrefOverride" href="http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/17ele46q0hkfwjpg/original.jpg" rel="lytebox" style="background-attachment: scroll; background-color: transparent; background-image: url(http://ganja.gawkerassets.com/assets/base.v10.static/img/lytebox/blank.gif?hash=fc94f); background-position: 100% 0%; background-repeat: no-repeat no-repeat; border: 0px; bottom: 2px; color: #719602; display: block; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; height: 169px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; position: relative; text-decoration: none; text-indent: -100em; vertical-align: baseline; width: 300px;">Full size</a></div>

You've probably heard of countless different tweaks disguised as "maintenance" that claim to speed up your machine. Rarely will these revive a truly bloated machine. These tweaks include, but aren't limited to:<br />
<ul style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; list-style: none; margin: 0px 0px 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; list-style-image: url(http://ganja.gawkerassets.com/assets/v10.lifehacker.com/img/bullet.png); list-style-type: square; margin: 0px 0px 8px 2em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><b>Defragmenting</b>: Windows Vista, 7, and 8 (and Mac OS X) automatically defrag your hard drives, so you shouldn't have to do it manually. If you're still on XP, however, you're an exception—you'll <a href="http://lifehacker.com/software/feature/hack-attack-using-windows-scheduled-tasks-153089.php" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">still have to defrag regularly</a>.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; list-style-image: url(http://ganja.gawkerassets.com/assets/v10.lifehacker.com/img/bullet.png); list-style-type: square; margin: 0px 0px 8px 2em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><b>Cleaning Your Registry</b>: When you uninstall programs, they're more than likely to leave a few things behind in the Registry. It's annoying, but it <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5482701/whats-the-registry-should-i-clean-it-and-whats-the-point" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">isn't going to slow down your computer</a>. Registry cleaners are unnecessary and a tad risky, so you're better off leaving the Registry alone.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; list-style-image: url(http://ganja.gawkerassets.com/assets/v10.lifehacker.com/img/bullet.png); list-style-type: square; margin: 0px 0px 8px 2em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><b>Cleaning Windows Prefetching</b>: Prefetch is a Windows feature that keeps track of what apps you run in order to start them faster. We don't know where people got the idea that cleaning it out would somehow help, but it doesn't. In fact, it'll not only slow things down but could even cause problems.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; list-style-image: url(http://ganja.gawkerassets.com/assets/v10.lifehacker.com/img/bullet.png); list-style-type: square; margin: 0px 0px 8px 2em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><b>Disable System Restore (or Really, Any Other Windows Services</b>: Windows may run some services you don't need, but stopping them probably isn't going to speed it up enough to make you happy. In fact, if anything, you run the risk of stopping something important and causing more problems.</li>
</ul>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In short: if it sounds like snake oil, it probably is.</div>
<h3 style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 21px; font-style: inherit; font-weight: normal; line-height: 1.2; margin: 18px 0px 0.4em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility; vertical-align: baseline;">
So How <em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: normal; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Can</em> You Fix a Slow Computer?</h3>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
So we've spent a lot of time telling you what <em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">not</em> to do, but your computer's still slow and you want a solution. You can start by <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5825953/how-can-i-diagnose-and-fix-my-slow-computer" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">running a few diagnostics</a>, but chances are, you just have too many apps running at once (especially poorly made ones). Here's what we recommend you do:</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
</div>
<div class="lyteboxContainer right editorial" style="border: 0px; float: right; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; height: 192px; margin: 0px 0px 20px 40px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; position: relative; vertical-align: baseline; width: 300px;">
<div class="lyteboxLink" style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; height: 192px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; position: absolute; text-indent: -1000em; vertical-align: baseline; width: 300px;">
<a class="noHrefOverride" href="http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/184fm2hr1dee8jpg/original.jpg" rel="lytebox" style="background-attachment: scroll; background-color: transparent; background-image: url(http://ganja.gawkerassets.com/assets/base.v10.static/img/lytebox/blank.gif?hash=fc94f); background-position: 100% 0%; background-repeat: no-repeat no-repeat; border: 0px; bottom: 2px; color: #719602; display: block; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; height: 192px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; position: relative; text-decoration: none; text-indent: -100em; vertical-align: baseline; width: 300px;">Full size</a></div>
<img height="192" src="http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/184fm2hr1dee8jpg/medium.jpg" style="border: 0px; float: left; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px 40px 20px 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" width="300" /></div>
<b>Stop Running So Many Apps at Once</b>: Take a look at your system tray (or menu bar). If you have more than a few icons there, you have too many. If something is running that you didn't start, <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5087101/the-complete-guide-to-speeding-up-your-pcs-startup" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">take it out of your startup queue</a>. If you don't know what something is, find out if it's something you really need. If it's something you know you don't want, then <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5829096/the-best-app-uninstaller-for-windows" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">uninstall it completely</a>.<br />
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<b>Stop Installing Crappy Programs</b>: Sometimes, a single app can bring your entire computer to a screeching halt. This includes programs that run unnecessary services in the background, hook themselves into the Windows Shell (like Windows Explorer plugins), or are just plain slow.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<img alt="The Assumptions You Make About Your Slow PC (and Why They're Probably Wrong)" class="image_8 right v10_medium" src="http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/lifehacker/2011/08/toolbaroverload.jpg" style="border: 0px; float: right; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 20px 40px; max-width: 300px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; width: 300px;" title="The Assumptions You Make About Your Slow PC (and Why They're Probably Wrong)" />If you're skeptical about an app, ask yourself: Does your computer run faster when you close that program? If so, then surprise: you should probably ditch it. "Crappy" doesn't always mean "sketchy," either. After all, we'd consider iTunes a pretty crappy app since it injects itself into every corner of your computer and slows it down a ton when you run it. If you can't live without it, at least <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5821616/can-i-ditch-itunes-if-i-have-ios-devices-to-sync" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">use a different player for listening</a> and only open iTunes when you have to sync.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<b>Stop Bloating Up the Programs You Have</b>: The more work you heap onto an app, the slower it's going to run. Your music player will be slower if you have a huge library, so <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5948925/how-to-break-your-media-addiction-and-clean-up-your-digital-clutter" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">clean out that music you don't need</a>. Your browser will struggle the more add-ons and plugins you install, so <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5833074/how-do-i-stop-my-browser-from-slowing-to-a-crawl" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">clean it out to speed it up</a>. The less work you make your apps do, the faster they'll run.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<b>Perform Regular Maintenance</b>: While there are a lot of maintenance myths out there, you<em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">do</em> need to perform a little regular maintenance once in awhile. Most of it involves keeping your software updated, your programs list trim, and your temporary files emptied. Check out <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5815256/what-kind-of-maintenance-do-i-need-to-do-on-my-windows-pc" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">our guides to Windows</a> and <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5814440/what-kind-of-maintenance-do-i-need-to-do-on-my-mac" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Mac</a> maintenance for more info.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Of course, this all assumes you have a <em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">relatively</em> new computer that can handle the work you need to do. If you're trying to run the newest version of Photoshop on a 10 year old machine, no amount of responsibility will make it run fast—you'll need a new computer (and you can<a href="http://lifehacker.com/5623270/repurposing-an-old-computer-for-any-room-in-the-house" style="border: 0px; color: #719602; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">repurpose that old one</a>). But, barring really old hardware or other special circumstances, you should be able to take any computer and get it running fast again with a bit of care and common sense.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

Here’s How to Fix It!<br /> By <a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/author/ccawley/">Christian Cawley</a><br /><br /><img src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/muo-usbclose-intro.jpg?6cc8a5" /><div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you’re like me, you probably make good use of USB on your PC, from connecting keyboards and printers to smartphones, USB flash memory, Bluetooth, 3G or Wi-Fi dongles, headsets, game controllers and more.<br /><br /> USB is a versatile and easy-to-use connection format, but there is one thing that bugs many people (including me) about it: the inability of computer manufacturers from Apple to Lenovo, Dell to HP (short version: all of them) to correctly space the positioning of pairs of USB ports so that two devices can be connected at the same time!<br /><br /> However, upon investigation into this state of affairs, it seems that this inability is little more than an unnecessarily inflexible adherence to a set of agreements governing the use of USB on such devices. The result of this is that users will have to put up with the narrow gap between ports on their PCs and laptops and instead spend money on alternatives.<br />Typical Measurements For USB Ports<br /><br /> USB seems to be pretty ubiquitous, found on PCs, laptops, mobile phones, tablets, games consoles, NAS devices, set-top boxes and routers. With the advent of USB 3.0 it shows no immediate sign of going anywhere soon, but there remains this problem of the distance between port sizes failing to match the real-life situation of USB connectors being too big to sit side-by-side when connected to a laptop or PC.<br /><br /> The usual situation is that two USB cables can be connected concurrently, but that a cable and a USB wireless dongle (or other “fat” device) cannot be. Similarly, two “fat” devices cannot be connected together – some of the oversized USB devices might even overhang onto the neighbouring USB port.<br /><a name='more'></a><br /> It seems that 5 mm is between ports is common, a gap governed by the USB port hardware selected from a list of hardware by the computer’s manufacturer. There is little that can be done about this in physical terms, it would seem, other than to avoid purchasing “fat” USB devices (there is the possibility of filing down the side of the device connector, but in the case of something like a wireless dongle this might well make the peripheral useless).<br /><br />Fortunately, there are workarounds that you can use to overcome this most frustrating of computing issues…<br /></div>
<div>
<h3>
Solution #1 – Use One Port At a Time</h3>
<br />It might not be flexible and it might be obvious, but the option to use just a single port at any time is there.<br /><br />Of course, if you’re using a pair of devices that require connecting at the same time – such as a webcam and a microphone – this is going to prove difficult.<br /><br /><img src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/muo-usbclose-sticks.jpg?6cc8a5" /><br /><br />However for things like USB flash RAM and wireless dongles, this might just be the best option.<br /><h3>
Solution #2 – Break Out The Hubs</h3>
<br />Meanwhile, USB hubs are dirt cheap these days (although you might want to pay a little more for a decent unit) and can easily be connected to your computer. The result of this should be that you have additional ports, potentially a far preferable situation than the standard pair of ports on the side of your laptop or on the front of your PC tower.<br /><br /><img src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/muo-usbclose-hub.jpg?6cc8a5" /><br /><br />Additionally, hubs can be found in unusual places. Dell monitors often have a USB cable so that you can connect memory sticks and other devices to the computer via the monitor, while some keyboards come with built-in hubs. Printers often have USB hubs too, intended for printing directly from flash memory sticks.<br /><br />One creative solution to requiring additional USB ports comes in this Instructable, explaining how to <a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/Mouse-with-USB-port-optional-internal-drive/">turn your mouse into a USB hub</a>.</div>
<div>
<h3>
<br />Solution #3 – Extender Cables</h3>
<br />Perhaps not as cheap as a hub but potentially more flexible, extender cables often ship with wireless dongles and other hardware. Constructed with narrow connectors that can successfully sit alongside another similar connector, this solution can be used with any USB item you might have and has the added bonus of adding a few extra inches to an existing cable, something that might prove useful connecting printers, scanners and smartphone/tablet stands.</div>
<div>
<h3>
<br />Which Is Your Solution?</h3>
<br />Wouldn’t it be nice if the world’s computer manufacturers got together and came to an agreement about the distance between USB ports? The thing is, of course, they’re not entirely blameless.<br /><br /><img src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/muo-usbclose-proof.jpg?6cc8a5" /><br /><br />USB has been used as a connection form factor since 1996. USB hardware manufacturers have had more than enough time to design dongles and cables that easily sit side-by-side in computers.<br /><br />All-in-all, it’s a funny state of affairs, but at least we can find solutions in the form of cables, hubs and other peripherals that might have additional USB ports.<br /><br />Let us know what your preferred solution is.<br /><br />Image Credit: <a href="http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-18493894/stock-photo-usb-hub-with-minimum-depth-of-field-isolated-on-a-blue-reflective-surface.html">USB hub via Shutterstock</a></div>

<div style="border: 0px; color: #474747; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-top: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The <a href="http://mashable.com/follow/topics/ipad-mini/" style="color: #1e598e; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">iPad mini</a> hit stores Friday, and the folks at SquareTrade are back with a video of what the tablet does when it hits somewhere else: the pavement.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #474747; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-top: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The group dropped an iPad mini, <a href="http://mashable.com/follow/topics/nexus-7/" style="color: #1e598e; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Nexus 7</a>, and <a href="http://mashable.com/follow/topics/iPad-3/" style="color: #1e598e; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">iPad 3</a> onto concrete and into water to see how they survive.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #474747; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-top: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Each tablet was dropped from the SquareTrade “drop bot” to ensure that each was dropped the same way.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #474747; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-top: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
When dropped on its corner, the iPad mini survived with minimal damage to just the corner where it came in contact with the pavement. The Nexus 7 screen cracked on the edge of the screen, and the iPad 3 took a serious beating, cracking in a number of places on the screen.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #474747; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-top: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

<div style="border: 0px; color: #474747; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-top: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #474747; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-top: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
When dropped directly on the screen, the iPad mini took a pretty hard beating, cracking across the screen in a number of places, so much so that the screen would definitely need to be replaced before you could continue to use the tablet, the same for the iPad 3. The Nexus 7 survived the fall, however, with just a few bumps and bruises.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #474747; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-top: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
All that’s well and good, but what happens when you drop your tablet in water? The iPad mini appeared to survive a 10-second dunk with no problem. The iPad 3 survived the dunk, but had a few malfunctions, and the Nexus 7 reset itself and appeared unresponsive after getting wet.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #474747; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-top: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

With the Nexus 4, Nexus 10, and <a href="http://www.google.com/nexus/#/7">Nexus 7</a> 3G all having been announced this morning in a rather unexpected way, we're having a hard enough time wading through all the stuff currently flooding our inboxes. And in this storm of hardware, the new version of Android - 4.2 - has gotten a little lost. Google announced the latest iteration of its mobile OS today, as well, and it includes some pretty awesome new features - particularly Photo Sphere.<br />
<div>
<a name='more'></a><h3>
Photo Sphere</h3>
<br />
A 360 degree camera mode, Photo Sphere allows you to take Street View-like images that can be navigated in Google+. You can also upload these images to Google Maps (<a href="http://google-latlong.blogspot.com/2012/10/add-your-photo-sphere-images-to-google.html">see more here</a>, and see <a href="http://maps.google.com/help/maps/streetview/contribute/#all">actual contributions here</a>) to share with the whole world, which is pretty neat. See it in action in the video below:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0poff-mHQ4Q" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0poff-mHQ4Q</a><br />
<div>
<br />
<div>
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0poff-mHQ4Q"></a><br />
The system works by creating a ginormous JPEG file, in which XML metadata is stored that allows the 360 degree image to then be put together in a viewer like Google+. The Street View reference is no accident, as director of Android product management Hugo Barra <a href="https://plus.google.com/110023707389740934545/posts/TQZ7WZTMSeN">explained on Google+</a>:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
We were inspired by Street View in Google Maps, and the sophisticated pieces of equipment that Google custom-developed in order to bring you 360-degree photos from all over the world – cars, trikes, and even backpacks.<br />
<br />
Photo Spheres make you feel like you’re really there. When you're snapping a photo sphere, you can move in every direction, you can look up, you can look down, every detail from the original scene is just there.<br />
<br />
Photo Spheres are stored as JPEG files, and all of the information required to view them is embedded as open XML metadata in the image itself. So you can email them, post them to Google+, put them in Google+ photo albums. Check it out and also check out all of our Nexus news.<br />
<br />
<h3>
Gesture Typing</h3>
<br />
Have you ever wanted Swype, but not Swype? Google's got you covered in Android 4.2, with the introduction of Gesture Typing. It does exactly what you would think it would do: type by dragging through the letters of the word you want. It doesn't sound like much on paper, but given Swype's many loyal followers, Google was wise to implement this new input option.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://cdn.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/nexusae0_gesture-typing.png"><img height="299" src="http://cdn.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/nexusae0_gesture-typing_thumb.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br />
<h3>
Multi-User Support (Tablets Only)</h3>
<br />
This is huge. Multiple user support, on Android. A first for a major mobile OS. Now, this is limited to tablets for the time being, but we wouldn't be surprised if the dev community grabs onto this feature and starts implementing it on phones through custom ROMs. Manufacturers, too - Samsung has to be drooling about adding this to TouchWiz's monumental feature arsenal.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://cdn.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/nexusae0_multi-user-1.png"><img height="400" src="http://cdn.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/nexusae0_multi-user-1_thumb.png" width="295" /></a><br />
<br />
So, what does multi-user mode actually... do? Each user gets their own homescreens, backgrounds, widgets, apps, and games - even the data associated with those apps. Which is basically what <a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/07/30/multiple-user-accounts-are-coming-miles-of-code-is-already-in-aosp-and-some-of-it-is-quietly-working-on-devices-right-now/">Ron already knew was going to happen</a>.<br />
<br />
This really is huge, though. Google absolutely beat Apple, Microsoft, and pretty much everybody to the punch here. Sharing a tablet between family members is now a real, feasible use-case. Let's hope they know how to market it, because I really believe people will love this.<br />
<h3>
Miracast Wireless Display Support</h3>
<br />
Using a dongle (or a Miracast-ready display of any kind), you can transmit whatever's on your Android device's screen to your TV / monitor. Not too much more to say about that.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://cdn.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/nexusae0_tv_connect.png"><img height="354" src="http://cdn.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/nexusae0_tv_connect_thumb.png" width="400" /></a><br />
<h3>
Daydream</h3>
<br />
File this into the "relatively useless crap" category (sorry, Android team - it is), "Daydream" mode causes your phone or tablet to display photos from your gallery, or feeds from apps like Google Currents while it's docked or idle. When the screen is on. Right. Anyway, that's what is does, and here's a picture of it doing just that.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://cdn.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/nexusae0_daydream.png"><img height="291" src="http://cdn.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/nexusae0_daydream_thumb.png" width="400" /></a><br />
<h3>
Notification Power Controls</h3>
<br />
The new version of Android also has power controls in the the notification bar... but Google didn't really think that was important enough to say anything about it. You can access these controls (which allow you to toggle stuff like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Brightness, etc.) via a button in the notification bar, or a two-finger swipe down.<br />
<h3>
Lockscreen Widgets / New Clock App</h3>
<br />
We're hearing that Android 4.2 has lockscreen widgets, as well, but right now details are pretty scant. There are no pictures on this one, at the moment, but we'll update this post with new information as we learn it.<br />
<br />
Oh, and the clock app now has a built-in world clock, stop watch, and timer. Take a look (photo via<a href="http://www.theverge.com/2012/10/29/3569516/android-4-2-screenshots#3890305">The Verge</a>):<br />
<br />

Google Now<br />
<br />
Google Now has seen improvements, as well - you can now see flight information, restaurant reservations, hotel confirmations, and shipping details (presumably this is scraped from Gmail). Location-aware movie times, nearby attractions, and events have also been added. And yes, the "Swype-like" keyboard (dubbed "Gesture Typing") is part of Android 4.2, too. Rounding out the new 4.2 features is Miracast wireless display support. You can also launch apps via voice, as well as schedule meetings (wooooo!). Check out <a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/10/29/google-search-updated-brings-new-google-now-cards-and-voice-actions-yes-you-can-set-calendar-events/">our post</a> for the full details.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://cdn.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/nexusae0_2012-10-29_14h39_141.png"><img height="253" src="http://cdn.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/nexusae0_2012-10-29_14h39_14_thumb1.png" width="400" /></a><br /><br />

<br />
<a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-websites-to-make-you-a-photoshop-ninja/">10 Websites To Make You A Photoshop Ninja</a><br />
<br />
<br />
Photoshop is hard. There’s all kinds of menus, commands, and keyboard shortcuts that you’ve got to figure out. Once you learn how it works, it’s an unbelievably useful and powerful tool, but the learning curve is enormous.<br />
<br />
Using the Web though, you can learn how to do just about anything in Photoshop, and either become great at it or just get really good at faking it. Either way, you’re doing cool stuff.<br />
<br />
Here are ten sites to learn Photoshop online and get you Photoshopping like a champion:<br />
You Suck at Photoshop<br />
<br />
<img border="0" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/yousuckat.png?6cc8a5" /><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.mydamnchannel.com/Big_Fat_Brain/You_Suck_at_Photoshop__Season_1/YouSuckatPhotoshop1_398.aspx">You Suck at Photoshop</a> is the place to start, just to defeat you a little bit and make you realize how badly you need to learn Photoshop. In all seriousness, though, Donnie Hoyle’s video tutorial series is both hilarious and informative. They’re helpful for learning how to do simple things, where to find particular tools, and how to mess with the pictures of people you love.<br />
<br />
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 20px 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<a href="http://www.tutorial9.net/category/photoshop/">Tutorial9</a> has<br /> a ton of different tutorials, including a lot of them for Photoshop. Every tutorial has step-by-step instructions, complete with pictures of the tools you need and the buttons you should click on (really helpful- what in the world does the “capture” tool look like?).<br /><br />Then, for everything you need to do, there’s a quick video showing you what it looks like. There’s no narration, but that’s okay- the step-by-step instructions do everything you need. Tutorial9 helps you do all kinds of things with Photoshop- my favorite was <a href="http://www.tutorial9.net/photoshop/create-burnt-parchment-from-scratch/">creating burnt parchment</a>. You know, without burning anything. Definitely agreat site to learn photoshop online.<br /><br /><br /><img border="0" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/psdtuts.png?6cc8a5" /><br /><br />With <a href="http://psdtuts.com/">PSDTUTS</a>, you’ll see lots and lots of pictures. Tutorials are made up almost entirely of pictures that give you the slightest detail instructions on how to do various things in Photoshop.<br /><br />One of the best things about PSDTUTS are the comments on the tutorials, which help to iron out the possible issues with the tutorials as presented. The tutorials are long, because they’re so broken down, but if they can teach me to make a Web banner out of a motorcycle, they’re doing something right.<br />Good-Tutorials<br /><br /><img border="0" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/goodtutorials.png?6cc8a5" /><br /><br />There’s nothing terribly unique about <a href="http://www.good-tutorials.com/">Good-Tutorials</a>, except that it’s more of a general guide to using Photoshop than a guide to achieving a particular effect in Photoshop.<br /><br />Though Good-Tutorials does have those tutorials, it’s also got things like “Create a Photoshop Action for Screenshots” to help save you time and effort in Photoshop. Simple tutorials and powerful Photoshopping both come from Good-Tutorials.<br />Photoshop Lady<br /><br /><img border="0" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/photoshoplady.jpg?6cc8a5" /><br /><br /><a href="http://www.photoshoplady.com/">The Photoshop Lady</a> pulls together some of the best Photoshop tutorials from around the Web, and lets you read and watch them easily. If you create an account, you can save tutorials for later, and you can also see the “Most Viewed” and “Highest Rated” tutorials to see what other people are learning how to do. Since it’s not centralized, some tutorials are better than others, but most of it is good stuff.<br />Photoshop Tutorials<br /><br /><img border="0" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/pstutorials.png?6cc8a5" /><br /><br /><a href="http://photoshoptutorials.ws/">Photoshop Tutorials</a> combines tutorials for Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, and Photography. It covers a whole range of things, and always tells you how advanced the particular tutorial is. Some are incredibly complicated, and some are great ways to do really basic things in Photoshop.<br /><br />Though it doesn’t have the largest database I found, it probably wins my award for easiest-to-follow tutorials. Users also rate and comment on tutorials, so you can see what people liked and hated on the site.<br />Luxa<br /><br /><img border="0" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/luxa.png?6cc8a5" /><br /><br /><a href="http://luxa.org/">Luxa</a> calls itself a “social learning site for Photoshop artists.” It’s a combination of tutorials, videos, and design articles. Users suggest video and tutorial topics, and Luxa helps them learn Photoshop.<br /><br />To really appreciate Luxa’s community, you’ll want to become a member, which is a bit of a pain but creates a lot of benefits. There’s also a voting system (though not an oft-used one yet) that helps bring the best to the top. In addition to all the tutorials too, Luxa also has a large collection of Photoshop brushes that will let you achieve before-impossible awesomeness.<br />Photoshop Contest<br /><br /><img border="0" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/pscontest.jpg?6cc8a5" /><br /><br /><a href="http://photoshopcontest.com/tutorials/photoshop-tips.html">Photoshop Contest</a> is one part site for Photoshop ninjas, one part site for becoming one. There are contests for people doing cool things with Photoshop, but also a big repository of tutorials and videos.<br /><br />Since the makers of the tutorials are usually on the site because they know Photoshop inside and out, they often have cool tips for how to take shortcuts and “cheat” an image. Most of the tutorials are pretty basic, though at least for me, there’s nothing basic about any of Photoshop.<br />PSHero<br /><br /><img border="0" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/pshero-thumb.jpg?6cc8a5" /><br /><br /><a href="http://pshero.com/">PSHero</a> gets onto the list for being the most practical of the bunch, and sharing the most tutorials that the average user would actually want. If you’re looking to do things like design a website, create logos, or make your photos grungier, you’re set with PSHero.<br /><br />There’s not a lot of higher-level stuff to be found, but I found that PSHero was perfect for someone like me, who’s more likely to be creating a logo than an anime airplane eating a lion on top of a mountain. The tutorials are easy to follow, and definitely geared toward the inexperienced Photoshopper.<br />PSDTop<br /><br /><img border="0" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/psdtop.gif?6cc8a5" /><br /><br />Another aggregator (I think the name might have taken from <a href="http://www.alltop.com/">AllTop</a>), <a href="http://www.psdtop.com/">PSDTop</a> is a great place to find all kinds of cool Photoshop Tutorials.<br /><br />Though it’s not the only site to have categories, its breakdown of the tutorials into various types (Drawing, Digital Art, etc.) is a great way to become ninja-like at a particular skill in Photoshop. Since it’s an aggregator, it too will have the occasional dud tutorial, but most are good.</h2>

<br />
Every computer user concentrate on high speed processing on their computer.But unfortunately our computer systems fails to provide such a high speed.Computer speed is mainly based on the RAM memory.computer will operates in slow mode,because of shortage in RAM memory.We can upgrade RAM (Random access memory) using a new RAM chip.But it may cost high compare to our daily using Pen drives.Yes we can increase the amount of RAM memory using our Pen drive as a temporary memory device.<br />
<br />
Here your Pen drive acts as a virtual or temporary memory device for your computer.We can convert this virtual memory as a RAM memory.Afterwards computer utilizes this pen drive memory as a RAM memory and computer speed will increases.<br />
<br />
<br />
How to do this...?<br />
<br />
<br />
1.First insert your pen drive to computer.<br />
<br />
<br />
2.Then format your Pen drive using FAT32 or NTFS format.I suggest FAT 32 format.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN89eO_dRgWA9ohaYoehhvyhPllxTzc_CPKYnqcmuji0nm9lJFyjdy1IPcySXBNcgSATR-wIX1Oa9p3WPX45T7E3vBkKr2jubWuP9ZiTAySq_J0o7BAAOeFIAFMHvaj0-d1Isy-kAM6WbF/s1600/2012-08-23_1052.png"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN89eO_dRgWA9ohaYoehhvyhPllxTzc_CPKYnqcmuji0nm9lJFyjdy1IPcySXBNcgSATR-wIX1Oa9p3WPX45T7E3vBkKr2jubWuP9ZiTAySq_J0o7BAAOeFIAFMHvaj0-d1Isy-kAM6WbF/s640/2012-08-23_1052.png" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
3.Then Right click and Go to properties.<br />
<br />
<br />
4.In properties go to Ready boost.<br />
<br />
<br />

Hey guys ,<br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;">sometimes it fascinates me that, we overlook the minute details of our life and go on ahead , one such detail is the the topic of this post .so , let me ask you one question , what happens when you power off your computer ? ,well the answer is simple it 'turns off' , now when you start it up again after a while , it still shows the correct time , how is that even without power supply that your computer could maintain time ? these are a few questions we will explore in this post .....</span><br />
post : <a href="http://gadget-geek-prashant.blogspot.com/2012/10/time-tracking-tale-of-rtc.html?spref=bl">life of a Gadget Geek: Time tracking - the tale of RTC</a>:Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5534271238736790472.post-22604581063733556572012-10-27T09:36:00.003-07:002012-10-27T09:36:17.261-07:00How to embed Audio – MP3 file in your blog post – the easiest way!<a href="http://raviratlami1.blogspot.in/2009/10/how-to-embed-audio-mp3-file-in-your.html">How to embed Audio – MP3 file in your blog post – the easiest way!</a><br />
<br />
<br />
Just Upload your audio file – MP3 file to http://archive.org and copy its download (stream link) link.<br />
<br />
It may be like this (sample) - http://ia310829.us.archive.org/3/items/Meridhun-RaviratlamiGharAaJaVe/RekhaKePyarMe.mp3<br />
<br />
Now, where you want to embed online audio player, copy-paste following code :<br />
<embed allowscriptaccess="always" flashvars="valid_sample_rate=true&amp;external_url=DOWNLOAD-LINK-OF-MP3" height="52" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" quality="high" src="http://www.odeo.com/flash/audio_player_standard_gray.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="300" wmode="transparent"></embed><br />
<br />
Here, simply replace DOWNLOAD-LINK-OF-MP3 with that of YOUR mp3 files that you have uploaded to http://archive.org.<br />
<br />
If we use the link given in sample, the final code will be like this -<br />
<embed allowscriptaccess="always" flashvars="valid_sample_rate=true&amp;external_url=http://ia310829.us.archive.org/3/items/Meridhun-RaviratlamiGharAaJaVe/RekhaKePyarMe.mp3" height="52" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" quality="high" src="http://www.odeo.com/flash/audio_player_standard_gray.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="300" wmode="transparent"></embed><br />
<br />
And, you are done!<br />
<br />
Here is the actual implementation of the above code -<br />
<br />
<embed allowscriptaccess="always" flashvars="valid_sample_rate=true&external_url=http://ia310829.us.archive.org/3/items/Meridhun-RaviratlamiGharAaJaVe/RekhaKePyarMe.mp3" height="52" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" quality="high" src="http://www.odeo.com/flash/audio_player_standard_gray.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="300" wmode="transparent"></embed>
<br />
This method has many benefit – services like e-snips and lifelogger remove your mp3 files randomly without giving you reasons. Archive.org files remain forever (provided it is not copyrighted material)<br />
